Nidestream is a download manager for macOS. It has two parts: the Nidestream app and the Nidestream Integration browser extension for Chrome, Firefox and other browsers.
The short version
Nidestream does not collect, sell or share your data. There are no accounts, no analytics and no tracking. Everything the browser extension handles goes only to the Nidestream app on your own Mac.
What the browser extension handles, and why
When you download something, or choose a Nidestream option from the right-click menu, the extension passes the
following to the Nidestream app running on the same computer (over the local address 127.0.0.1,
which never leaves your Mac):
- the address of the file, and the address and title of the page it came from;
- the file's name, size and type, as reported by the browser;
- the cookies the browser holds for the file's address, so downloads that need you to be signed in still work;
- your browser's user agent string, so the server sends the same file it would send the browser.
To show videos you can download, the extension notes the address, type and size of video and audio files that pages load, for the tab you're on. It never reads their contents. This list is kept in the browser's temporary storage and cleared when you leave the page.
The extension sends nothing to the developer or to any other server.
What the app stores
The Nidestream app keeps your download list (addresses, file names, progress, and the cookies needed to resume
unfinished downloads) in ~/Library/Application Support/Nidestream on your Mac, readable only by your
user account. Cookies are deleted from the list when a download finishes. Passwords you enter for sites are
stored in your macOS Keychain. Removing a download removes its data.
The app connects to the internet only to download the files you ask for, using the addresses you gave it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at this address with a new date.
